This site is built entirely from public data and open-source software, self-hosted with no third-party services. What we use, and the terms it comes with:
Map data & basemap
- Basemap — Protomaps basemap build, derived from OpenStreetMap. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
- Basemap style — @protomaps/basemaps (BSD-3-Clause). Label fonts: Noto Sans (SIL Open Font License) via protomaps/basemaps-assets.
- County & ZIP geography — U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary files (public domain).
- School district boundaries — NCES EDGE composite file (public domain).
Software
- MapLibre GL JS v4.7.1 — BSD-3-Clause (license text).
- PMTiles v3.2.0 — BSD-3-Clause.
Funding data
- E-Rate funding figures — USAC Open Data (public data published by the Universal Service Administrative Company). Figures are the federal committed share of funded requests, FY2021–2025, de-duplicated to the funding-request level.
- Congressional delegation data (letter tool) — U.S. Census ZCTA-to-district relationship file and the unitedstates/congress-legislators dataset (public domain / CC0).
